Rebecca “Ruby” S. Ovitt, Emerita

B.A., Philippine Normal University; M.A. Educational Administration, the University of Hawaii at Manoa; M.A. Administration and Policy Analysis, Stanford University; D.Min., Hawaii Theological Seminary; author; retired principal, Hawaii Baptist Academy Elementary Division. BIH adjunct faculty since 1988.

She pursued higher education in the United States as an East-West Center Grantee 1969-71. She received honors and awards for her outstanding service as an administrator and community leader from the Senate and the House of Representatives, State of Hawaii; City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, and the United Filipino Council 2006; American Heart Association 2003; Faculty Tribute Award, Bible Institute of Hawaii 1999; Christian Service Award, Hawaii Theological Seminary (formerly International College and Graduate School,1994; Parent-Teacher Fellowship Award, Hawaii Baptist Academy, 1991; J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award,1986; Governor’s Office, Commission on Children and Youth, Hawaii1976. She continues to be invited at churches and organizations to speak on how God loves and heals the broken-hearted. She is an active member of University Avenue Baptist Church. She enjoys teaching at BIH.

Rev. Todd A. Capen

B.A., Biola Univ.; M.Div., Reformed Theological Seminary Orlando; pastor of churches in California, Michigan, and Florida; Senior Pastor, Trinity Presbyterian Church, Kailua. BIH adjunct faculty since 2008.

Mr. Clive Cowell

B.S., Nottingham University, England; M.A. in Biblical Studies; Multnomah Biblical Seminary; short-term missionary to Thailand, the Philippines, Macedonia, China, and Japan; Teaching Fellow at Multnomah Seminary; former church administrator. PacRim Christian University Faculty. Associate Pastor, Kalihi Union Church, Former Executive Director of BIH.

Dr. Mike Dugal

Dr. Mike Dugal recently retired from the United States Army with 33 years of active service. He served as a military chaplain for 30 of those years and finished his career here in Hawaii. Chaplain Dugal is ordained with the Assemblies of God. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology from Southern Bible College in Hous10n, Texas, a Masters of Sacred Ministry from Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Oregon, a Masters of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia, a Masters of Science in Strategic Studies from The Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a Masters of Divinity from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, Missouri, and a Ph.D. in Biblical counseling from Trinity Theological Seminary in Newberg, Indiana (Endorsed by the University of Liverpool). Mike is a Fellow with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and bolds state licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Texas. He also serves as a certified Faith Strengths Performance Coach with Gallup University. Dr. Dugal and his wife, Lynette, are the proud parents of Denise and David.

Mr. Brandon Edmunds

B.A., English, Cal Poly SLO CA; M.Div., Westminster Seminary, California; Th.M., Biblical Theology, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, South Hamilton, MA. Brandon teaches Bible and Theology for Trinity Christian School in Kailua and is an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church (PCA) also in Kailua. He and his wife Anna have been married for 7+ years and have two children.

Dr. Randall “Randy” Furushima

B.A., the University of Hawaii; M.Ed., Boston College; Ed.D., Columbia University (New York). President Emeritus and Dean of the Graduate School, Pacific Rim Christian University. Co-chair of the Bible and Practical Theology group of the Society of Biblical Literature. BIH Executive Director July 2018 – June 2021.

Dr. James Kwong

B.A., Mathematics, The University of Hawaii at Manoa; M.Div. Pastoral/General, Talbot School of Theology. Ministry experiences with Kalihi Union Church, Youth For Christ Hawaii, Chinese Baptist Church of Central Orange County, and Pastor of Administration at Faith Christian Fellowship; currently works at Kaimuki Christian School as the Student Services Coordinator. He is a member of Kalihi Union Church.

Pastor Gary Lau

Gary Lau is the creator of the Learn the Bible Fast methodology. He has been a National Instructor for Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, teaching pastor for New Hope Central Oahu, and Executive Dean and Adjunct Faculty with Pacific Rim Christian University. Gary has a B.A. from the University of Hawaii and a M.Div. from King’s Seminary.

Dr. Bong R. Ro

B.A. Bible, Columbia International University; B.A. History, Wheaton College; M.Div. Covenant Theological Seminary; S.T.M. & Th.D. Concordia Lutheran Seminary; OMF Missionary: Singapore (1970-74), Taiwan (1975-89), Korea (1990-2000); Hawaii Theological Seminary (2000-2009), Director of Korean Program; Hawaii Theological Seminary, President. BIH adjunct faculty since 2009.

Bong and Alma Ro have served with Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) for 30 years: Singapore (1970-74), Taiwan (1975-89); Korea (1990-2000). Bong has taught at different seminaries in these countries. Bong also served as the Executive Secretary of Asia Theological Association (1970-90) and the International Director of the Theological Commission of WEA (1990-96). Since 2000 Bong has taught at Hawaii Theological Seminary (former International College and Graduate School) and Pacific Rim Christian College.


Dr. Martha Stinton

B.F.A. Art History, Northern Arizona University; M.A., Biblical Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary; D.Min., Gordon- Conwell Theological Seminary. Vice President for Academic Affairs, Pacific Rim Christian University. Co-pastor New Hope Kailua. A women’s conference speaker in Xouzou, China; Brisbane, Australia; Langley, British Columbia, and Nuku’alofa, Tonga.

Dr. Rick Stinton

B.S. and B.Ed., University of  Calgary; Th.M.; D.Min., Dallas Theological Seminary. Senior Pastor at New Hope Kailua, which was planted in 2007 along with his wife, Dr. Martha Stinton. He  is also on the faculty at Pacific Rim Christian  University and BIH adjunct faculty.

Mrs. Cheryl Takabayashi-Foo

B.A., the University of Washington in Political Science and Japanese Language and Literature; J.D., Santa Clara University School of Law; M.A., Argosy University in Marriage and Family Therapy. For the past two years, I’ve served on staff at Wellspring Covenant Church as Director Meaningful Discipleship, co-leading classes with Pastor Dale that encourage a lifestyle of emotionally healthy spirituality and meaningful relationships with God and others. I also have a law practice where I specialize in wills, trusts, and probate. I value good relationships, deep conversations, and people. I am grateful for opportunities to serve and help others. Other passions I enjoy: spending time with my husband Nathan, my two children Rylan and Jensen, and my two stepdaughters Bethany and Jessica; good food; good books; a day of rest; and most recently…traveling!

Pastor Ty Tamasaka

Ty Tamasaka holds a Master of Arts Degree in Christian Ministry from Pacific Rim Christian University in addition to Bachelor Degrees in both Psychology and Religious Studies from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. In addition to having served as a Lead Pastor, Youth Pastor, and Teaching Pastor, in Hilo and Honolulu, Ty serves as an a Teaching Faculty for Pacific Rim Christian University and has authored two books including, Starting Fresh: Following Jesus on the Adventure of a Lifetime and More than a Conqueror: 5 Pathways to Personal Revival both of which can be found on his website tytamasaka.com along with life-devotions, leadership articles, and a teaching podcast.

Ty joins the teaching faculty at the Bible Institute of Hawaii with a heart to bring Biblical encouragement for life, love, and leadership.

Pastor Dale Vallejo-Sanderson

M.Div., Fuller Theological Seminary. Senior Pastor of Kailua Christian Church . Served as pastor and youth pastor in other churches for over 40 years in Hawaii. Wife, Bev with three sons and daughter in laws and two wonderful granddaughters. I have a passion for God’s church to become genuine, deeply devoted, emotionally and spiritually healthy people who love and serve God and others more freely. I love my family, most people fairly easily, traveling, sharing good coffee and conversations and movies.

lead pastor at Waialae Baptist Church and is adjunct faculty with The Bible Institute of Hawaii and Pacific Rim Christian University. Former professor at The College at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. M.A. in Theology, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Ph.D. in Theology, University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
